"The Confederacy"A Restoration Romp by John Vanbrugh The Confederacy, an undeservedly ignored masterpiece of restoration comedy, was first performed in London in 1705. More farce than comedy of manners, all the men are rogues and all the women no better than they should be. The two female protagonists freely confess that plaguing their husbands is a way of passing time that would otherwise hang very heavy on their hands. Directed by Katie Hudson 19th to 26th July at 7.45pm. Tickets £6. |

"Was he Anyone?"A British comedy by N F Simpson Produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois Albert Whitbrace is alive and well and drowning in the Mediterranean". While Albert treads water and his lifebelt gets soggier, his wife appeals to a charitable organisation to help him, but things are never straightforward in our complex society. Questions must be answered, forms filled out and Mrs Whitbrace has to prove she can't afford to have her husband rescued privately. The British Government, religious organisations, the TUC, the media and many others, become involved in trying to resolve the issues and give hope to Albert and his wife. Did it happen? Could it happen now? Was he Anyone? Directed by Alan Hoad 13th to 20th September at 7.45pm. Tickets £6. |

"The Seagull"A Comedy by Anton Chekhov. Translated by Tom Stoppard This 1997 translation by Tom Stoppard was critically acclaimed when it opened at the Old Vic. Described by the critics as 'breathtaking' and of the translation; 'never till now have I seen one which so persuasively catches the tragi-comic mood of the writing'. The unravelling of Chekhov's "The Seagull" confronts us with scenes showing almost every character forlornly besotted with someone who cannot reciprocate; yet Chekhov goes on to describe his play as "a comedy with much talk about literature and five tons of love". Indeed, further to this, he selects a sub-title "A Comedy in Four Acts" conjuring up our own expectations and anticipation of what is to follow. Directed by Laurie Noble 8th to 15th November at 7.45pm. Tickets £6. |
