Readings and Castings

All castings and readings are open to members and non-members. It's a great way to meet the team and find out what a show is like.

Readings are simply that. Parts of the script are read aloud with different people reading different characters, with plenty of swapping about. A great way to see if there are any characters you'd like to play.

Castings are normally organised in the following way. You turn up, fill in a form indicating which part or parts you'd like to have a go at and then wait with everyone else in the green room until called. The casting committee then call for a few people at a time to act through a small excerpt from the show (reading from the script) in order to see how the characters interact. At the end of the evening decisions are made and the roles allocated.

At HIADS we take pride in the fact that new-comers very often get parts in a show from their first audition.

THE SEAGULL by ANTON CHEKHOV, Translated by Tom Stoppard. Saturday 8 - 15 November 2008

"One must show life not as it is, nor as it should be, but as it appears in our dreams"

When the greatest living playwright translates a world classic and concentrates on conveying the feelings, emotions and mood of the piece more than any other previous translation, we have a powerful drama described by the critics as ‘breathtaking’ and, of the translation, ‘never till now have I seen one which so persuasively catches the tragi-comic mood of the writing’.

Why not be part of this and come on an exciting journey with me to develop character, plot and mood? There is no doubt that we will all learn something about our craft and if you think it won’t be fun, just ask the cast of Cherry Orchard and Vanya!!

The ages of the characters are not vitally significant, as long as the relationships look believable on stage. A real opportunity for character development and fun.
